Abuelitas vs MS-13

Finally an anti-gang program that makes sense…. especially because the guy who is sponsoring this effort was forced by his abuelita, Guadalupe to become a priest…and we all know that there is nothing to fear more than an abuelita bent on discipline and instilling the fear of God upon young impressionable minds…..

Grandmoms vs. gangs
Salinas mayor, bishop want to use their influence to combat violence

In the battle against gang violence, Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue has teamed up with Bishop Richard Garcia to unveil his latest weapon: grandmothers.

“My grandmother, Guadalupe, was a very influential person in my life,” Garcia said at the plan’s unveiling Friday. “Grandmothers are very influential persons in the Latino community.”

With a group of eight mothers and grandmothers as a backdrop, Garcia said he will convene a special gathering of grandmothers July 28 at St. Mary of the Nativity Church in Salinas to enlist their help in the city’s fight against gang violence.

Garcia has tapped Sister Ana Maria Pineda, a member of the Sisters of Mercy and a renowned theologian with Santa Clara University, to conduct the meeting.

“Some of our abuelitas have taught us about God and how to help youth in our streets,” Garcia said about grandmothers. “We want to invite all of our abuelitas to come to our meeting in St. Mary’s Church.”
