News Sancocho: Airport lines, gay rights and a random picture

In case you were wondering what your elected representatives have been up to lately….

Senator Ken Salazar doesn´t want to wait in line at the airport

“In my view, these waits times are unacceptable for the traveling public,” said Salazar, D-Colo. “I’ve personally witnessed lines snaking the equivalent of several city blocks at peak periods.”

Rep. Ciro Rodríguez not so sure about horse meat tacos…

“I personally don’t believe in all honesty that you can just put a ban on all that because there are people who do eat beef,” he said. “Like we eat beef, they eat beef, but it’s a horse meat.”

Rep Ileana Ros Lehtinen knows more than the rest of us about bombing Syria

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is the senior Republican member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. They expressed their anger at the fact that the Bush administration ‘has thrown an unprecedented veil of secrecy around the Israeli airstrike. It has briefed only a handful of very senior members of Congress, leaving the vast majority of foreign relations and intelligence committee members in the dark. We are among the very few who were briefed, but we have been sworn to secrecy on this matter.’”

AND speaking of Cubans from Florida, all 3 voted against their party in favor of gay rights. Yes, 3 republican Latinos, and 2 of them male, voted in favor of protecting gays against discrimination…

Dixie Representatives Split on Gay Rights. When the US House recently passed the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which extends job-related civil rights to gays, five Southern GOPers left their party and supported ENDA: FL: Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Mario Diaz-Balart & Ileana Ros-Lehtinen; LA: Jim McCrery; and VA: Tom Davis.

Rep Henry Cuellar paying attention to obscure district matters

“As a Congressman, I don’t do investigations,” Cuellar said. “I do make inquiries, and I surely have made inquiries into this … . My understanding is that there is already some investigation going on.”

AND Nydia Velázquez appeared in this photo

Note from Ken Salazar to the Hispanic Media: Mute Your Damn Phone!!!!!

Some time ago…. when immigration was the only topic in the Senate, Senators Bob Menéndez and Ken Salazar, held a phone press conference which ended in total chaos…

According to our nonbinding sources and the audio (which I need to figure out how to upload), there were people talking on the phone at the same time as the Senators, there was background audio from people´s offices, questions were randomly asked at the same time, and even a super minor “disturbance” between some snotty gringa reporter that wanted all the questions to be asked in English, and a Hispanic media type who needed audio in Spanish, even if it was speaker phone crappy audio.

So apparently this was all duly noted and there will be change in Washington:

U.S. Senator Ken Salazar

FOR PLANNING PURPOSES

Sen. Salazar to Discuss His Efforts on Children’s Health Insurance and Veteran’s Mental Health

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week, the Senate is working on completing a package that works to expand health insurance coverage for children. With over 180,000 uninsured children living in Colorado , Senator Salazar supports expanding the children’s health insurance program. Under this legislation Colorado would receive $127 million for the program in 2008, providing $56 million more to Colorado than last year.

yada, yada, yada….

WHO: United States Senator Ken Salazar

WHAT: Sen. Salazar to Discuss His Efforts on Children’s Health Insurance and Service to Our Troops

WHERE: Call toll free: (omitted)

WHEN: 10:30AM MDT/ 12:30P EDT, TOMORROW Wednesday August 1, 2007

IMPORTANT: To improve the quality of the call please always mute your phone when not speaking, do not place the conference call on hold or speakerphone and always minus out the call from your mix (for radios). If your phone does not have a mute button, on your phone push #5 and you will be muted. Pressing #5 again will un-mute.

Salazar Breaks Up With GONEzales

We have made much commentary about the fact that pretend democrat Ken Salazar was a great fan of Alberto Gonzales back in the good ol days, when the only scandal Alberto had to worry about was advocating torture.

(Fortunately a little thing like torture and violating the Constitution didn´t get in the way of having our very own first Hispanic attorney general….

Dos amigos

But even the most loyal Hispanic friend can turn against you in the Washington political winds (even after sitting next to you during your confirmation hearing and sending notes back and forth) … especially if that friend actually has to get reelected some day…. so here it is:

Salazar Tells Gonzales to Resign
He says the Department of Justice is too Politicized

Senator Ken Salazar is calling on Attorney General Alberto Gonzales to resign saying the Department of Justice had become too politicized.

He joins a growing number of democrats and a handful of republicans saying gonzales should step down amid allegations that federal prosecutors were fired for political reasons.

But don´t worry, at least Salazar clears up that this bold move, of calling for the ouster of someone that everybody hates already, was done with un corazón partido…

Salazar considers Gonzales a friend and says he sees so much of the American dream in his story of growing up poor and going on to Harvard. (and married a blond)

Salazar says he called Gonzales to inform him of his decision today saying he reached it with a quote “heavy heart and disappointment.’

What next? will Hispanic “civil rights” organizations like the National Council of la Raza turn against you to? No need to worry

(As I was writing this breaking news happened… Gonzales to replace Wolfowitz at the World Bank)

By the way here is the text of Salazar at Gonzales confirmation hearing before the sad break up…

News Sancocho: Gingrich Hates nonGhetto Hispanics too,

Unfortunately my real job is interfering with my important blogging activities so I don´t have a chance to add my snide comments to each and everyone of these important stories. The oneliners will have to do:

Gingrich doesn´t even like Hispanics who speak English only.

You know its bad when Latinos want token Latinos to resign

Richardson López is running for Secretary of State by visiting the axis of evil

The Balarts keep forgetting they can talk about topics other than Cuba.

AND Ken Salazar keeps forgetting that as a pretend Democrat he doesn’t always have to vote as a Republican

Latino Si Se Puede Wax Museum Advances

As we mentioned way back, the 100 Primer Impacto Hours agenda for the Hispanic Caucus included getting us an Official Museum to exhibit Selena’s dresses and all that Chicano art on loan from Cheech Marin.

And yes, our very own museum is moving forward, faster than immigration reform or universal healthcare.

Now you may think this is a non-controversial bill, with not much conflict in sight (other than where the hell are they going to find room for it on the Mall).

Well, think again.

According to our nonbinding unconfirmed sources, there is growig tension among Hispanic legislators who, despite their public bipartisan bigender support of the Museum, are privately shouting at each other and arguing about everything from the name of the building to the order in which the 7 foot wax statues of themselves will appear.

(It is only a matter of time before the gringo media does this story, so please credit us exclusively, with the exclusive details you will only find here).

Here are some of the names they are fighting over:

  • The Cesar Chavez Chicano Si Se Puede Museo, proposed by Hilda Solís
  • The Si Se Puede Cesar Chavez Museum of La Raza, proposed by Joe Baca
  • The Cesar Chavez-Dolores Huerta-Ricardo Montalbán Si Se Puede Museum, proposed by Grace Napolitano
  • The Elvira Arellano Latino Immigrant Contributions To America Museum, proposed by Luis Gutiérrez
  • The Hispanic-American Third World Country Museum of Freedom, proposed by Ileana Ros Lethinen
  • The We Have Been Here for Five Generations Museum, proposed by Ken Salazar
  • The Latino-Chicano-Mexitlán Museo de Nuestra Raza, proposed by Lucille Roybal Allard
  • The Valentina Frida Kahlo Latina Power Museum, proposed by Loretta Sánchez
  • The Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Virgen Morena Patrona de América Museum, proposed by Ciro Rodríguez
  • The Humble Beginings From a Dirt Floor In Texas to the Mall Museum, proposed by Silvestre Reyes
  • The Xavier Becerra Nuestro Orgullo National Latino Museum on the Mall, proposed by Xavier Becerra
