RIP Only Senator To Do More Than The Whole Coconut Caucus

By Ticatecla, August 26, 2009 9:29 am

Sad sad news this morning, especially if you are the least bit into immigration reform. Senator Ted Kennedy, honorary Latino and immigration reform thinker/crafter/compromiser is no longer with us. Since he advocated for us more than the whole Coconut Caucus, now would be an appropriate time to freak out.

Edward Kennedy, Senate Stalwart, Dies

Senator Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts, a son of one of the most storied families in American politics, a man who knew triumph and tragedy in near-equal measure and who will be remembered as one of the most effective lawmakers in the history of the Senate, died late Tuesday night. He was 77.

The death of Mr. Kennedy, who had been battling brain cancer, was announced Wednesday morning in a statement by the Kennedy family, which was already mourning the death of the senator’s sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver two weeks earlier.

Que descanse en paz, Ted.

Further Proof That Brown Is The New Green Is The New Black

By Ticatecla, August 20, 2009 4:01 pm

Here’s another piece of news that white people can get behind more than undocumented Mexicans behind a border wall. Like I said. México. So hot right now.

Mexico City bans stores from distributing plastic bags

MEXICO CITY, Mexico (CNN) — Mexico City’s thousands of stores went green Wednesday, as amended ordinances on solid waste now outlaw businesses from giving out thin plastic bags that are not biodegradable.

The law affects all stores, production facilities and service providers within the Federal District, which encompasses the city limits. Nearly 9 million people live inside the district and another 10 million reside in surrounding communities that make up greater Mexico City.

Mexico City becomes the second large metropolitan area in the Western Hemisphere to outlaw the bags. San Francisco in March 2007 enacted an ordinance that gave supermarkets six months and large chain pharmacies about a year to phase out the bags. Los Angeles is set to impose a ban if the state of California does not enact a statewide 25-cent fee per bag by July.

Thanks to our bloggerazzi friends for sending the links along.

STOP THE PRESSES: White Media Discovers Mexican Hongos

By Ticatecla, August 20, 2009 3:24 pm

Call them hongos or champiñones or some crazy Aztec name that we can all pronounce even though we’re straight descendants of la Reina Isabel, but turns out that some white MSM that no Latinos listen to is SHOCKED at the fact that we eat moldy corn. Delicious, delicious moldy corn. Or as white people call it, tar-like fungus. Buen provecho:

In Mexico, Tar-Like Fungus Considered Delicacy

In Central Mexico, locals are feasting on a unique delicacy that sprouts to life this time of year from the country’s corn fields.

It’s still called by its Aztec name, cuitlacoche (pronounced QUEET-la-coh-chay--ed.note: mwahahahaha!). The gray, stone-shaped fungus turns into a gunky, tar-like mush when cooked.

But it is revered by Mexican gourmet chefs and home-style cooks alike. The fungus — which some say has an earthy, tangy, mushroom-like flavor with a hint of raw corn — is a popular ingredient in soups and quesadillas.

I love that there were 7 minutes dedicated to this tianguis delicacy. Since there are more brown people now on the bench and we’re all Mexicans anyway,  México is so in, guys. So in.

La Camisa Roja: The Miami Cubans Vs Juanes Saga

By Ticatecla, August 6, 2009 3:30 pm

Well since all of the MSM news sources have been talking and talking about some Boricua lady and there have been no Fidel news to enrage our Miami friends, they’ve decided that now there is a new red enemy in town who is not Hugo Chavez, and it is none other than the Latino papi Juanes, who has DARED to do a concert in Cuba.

You may remember him from such satirical cartoons as this one:

But in case you have forgotten about this dude with the I’m-gonna-kill-your-abuelita eyes, Miami has not:

US Cubans Threaten To Boycott Juanes Due To A Future Concert In Cuba

According to Ninoska Perez, executive of the Council for the Freedom of Cuba, Cubans in their homeland need democracy and solidarity; not a concert that ignores the “oppression” they have been subjected to for 50 years.

Cuban exiles in the United States accuse Colombian rocker Juanes of being an accomplice of the communist Castro regime in their homeland after the rocker announced a concert in Havana.

Several Cuban organizations in the U.S. said it was “immoral” of the artist to ignore the situation of the Cuban people. Some threaten to boycott Juanes when the Colombian comes to Miami.

“Apolitical concerts do not exist. Indolence is the worst of evils, because if you don’t take position against a dictatorship, a criminal regime, you become complicit,” the said Ninoska Perez.

Of course there are way more reputable Spanish language press sources reporting on this if you happen to not believe us.

Panamanian Hates Boricuas on the Bench

By Ticatecla, August 4, 2009 8:05 am

Who says Latinos stand united! Our very favorite Panamanian-turned-white man John McCain has decided to throw Republican caution to the wind and not support Sonia Sotomayor as Boricuan benchmaster extraordinaire even though he’s in a super Latino state and is up for reelection.

But, ”an excellent resume and an inspiring life story are not enough to qualify one for a lifetime of service on the Supreme Court,” McCain said. He cited, as have other Republicans Miguel Estrada, a Hispanic who was nominated by President Bush for the DC Circuit Court but blocked by Democrats. He added that he does “not believe that she [Sotomayor] shares my belief in judicial restraint.” And: “Though she attempted to walk back from her long public record of judicial activism during her confirmation hearings, Judge Sotomayor cannot change her record.”

Basically, he’s like, yeah yeah yeah you’re smart or whatever but you’re not gonna vote like I want you to vote. Hmmm. Let’s wait and see what our useful advocates at our super useful Latino organizations chose to say about it!

Anybody?

Anybody?

And what does Sotomayor have to say about all of this?

And also, will everyone (republican)  pleaaaase stop toting around Miguel Estrada as your Republican Golden Brown Boy. Did we not learn a lesson from the Alberto Gonzales book? There’s only one Gonzales we should answer to. Or shouldn’t. Because we’re that stereotyped.
